Verse 61 — The Seeker Becomes the Divine

Whoever contemplates My pure, formless nature, or Me with qualities and form, becomes of My nature — Brahman. Wherever such a fulfilled seeker goes, he makes the place holy by the mere touch of his sacred feet, just as the sun purifies the earth and its atmosphere. [Verse 61]

Verse 61 makes a generous promise: both routes — with form and without — arrive at the same destination.

Two paths, one goal

Key idea. There is no deadline for moving from devotion-with-form to inquiry-into-the-formless. It "just happens" — it may take many lifetimes — and there is no pressure from teacher or scripture. When the seeker is genuinely ready, an urge arises for something higher than the finite experiences of life, and he graduates naturally into jnana yoga.

What he becomes

The verse says such a one "becomes of My nature" — Sa Aham Bhavami, "he becomes I":

• He discovers the identity of the individual and the Supreme (jivatma–paramatma aikya).
• Having found God in himself, he becomes, in effect, a walking God in human form.

Sanctifying wherever he goes

Because of the body's association with the realized Self, the body becomes sacred, the feet sacred, even the dust of the feet sacred — and so the very place he visits is purified. Just as sunlight purifies whatever it touches, the jnani sanctifies any land he travels through.

This verse is thus also a glorification of the jnani (jnani stuti) — a reminder from the Upanishads that the knower of the Self can himself be revered. Verse 62 brings the entire Ram Gita to its close, with a final promise to every sincere reader.
