Verse 49 — A, U, M: The Three Layers of Reality

Mapping A, U, M onto the gross, subtle and causal.

The rishis declare that a-kara represents the waker, u-kara the dreamer, and ma-kara the deep-sleeper, along with all their respective experiences. These distinctions are valid only before absorption, never in the absolute nature of reality. [Verse 49]

To resolve the universe using Om, you first need to know what each of its three sounds — A, U, M — stands for. Verse 49 maps them onto the three layers of the cosmos.

The three layers

The universe can be viewed in three "densities," like a tree seen at three stages:

SoundLayerCosmic nameAnalogy
A (अ)Gross universe (Sthula)Virat / VishvaThe full-grown tree; the adult
U (उ)Subtle universe (Sukshma)Hiranyagarbha / TaijasaThe sapling; the child
M (म)Causal universe (Karana)Ishvara / PrajnaThe seed; the womb

The order of creation and of dissolution

Creation moves from seed to tree; dissolution reverses it — like dressing and undressing:

    G2[Gross / A] --> Su2[Subtle / U] --> K2[Causal / M]
    end

Putting on clothes: vest, then shirt, then coat. Removing them: coat, then shirt, then vest. In meditation you dissolve in the reverse order of creation: resolve the gross (A) into the subtle (U), and the subtle (U) into the causal (M).

What is being resolved — and what remains

An important detail: each of the three layers includes its reflected consciousness. So when you resolve the three layers, you are also resolving the three "reflected consciousnesses."

Key idea. When A is dissolved into U, U into M, and M into silence, all names, all forms, and all reflected consciousness are resolved. What remains cannot be resolved: the Original Consciousness — Turiya — the "fourth" that is not a state but the awareness present through all states.

The verse ends with the crucial reminder: these three divisions are real only before direct knowledge — a working scaffold for meditation. In the absolute reality there is only the non-dual Self. Verse 50 gives the actual chanting method for this resolution.
